Version 10 introduces a powerful, native integration that allows you to store map marker data directly within your existing WordPress Post Types. This feature provides a seamless, zero-cost alternative for assigning locations to your content without relying on external plugins/services.
Why Use Post Type Locations? #
This new system allows you to add markers directly to a standard Post, Page, or any Custom Post Type you have created.
- No Third-Party Plugin/Service Required: This system completely removes the need to install and configure additional third-party tools like Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) or Toolset simply to store map coordinates.
- Decoupled from Maps: The location data is stored on the post itself, allowing you to easily reuse the same location across multiple maps you create within the plugin.
- Ideal for Light Use: While our comprehensive ACF integration remains the most powerful option for advanced users who need to store complex extra data (like custom fields for infowindows), the Post Type Locations feature is perfect for light use cases where you simply need to display a post’s location on a map.
⚠️ Beta Feature: It is important to note that this feature is in Beta at the time of writing. While fully functional for adding and loading basic markers, it may not be as comprehensive as our more mature ACF integration (which allows additional custom field support). We encourage you to test and provide feedback!
Enabling the Post Type Locations Editor #
To start adding marker locations to your content, you must first enable the new custom editor box for the desired post type.
Maps > Settings > Beta Settings > Enable Post Type Locations
Once enabled you will find a few additional options within this area:
- Post Types: Specify the post type you would like the system to function on. For example, all posts or pages, or a specific Custom Post type.
- Note: For release, only a single post type can be selected for this feature. In the future, we will add the ability to select multiple post types
- Post Description Type: Specify whether you want the Full content to be pulled into the info-windows of your markers, or the excerpt instead.
If all has gone well, you should see the location editor within your posts when you add/edit a new post.
Using the Location Editor #
Within your posts/pages editor, when creating/editing a post you should see the new location editor from WP Go Maps appear automatically:
Search for an address, or Right-click to mark an exact placement point and Save and Publish you post/page.
Your post is now ready to be loaded onto any of your maps!
Loading Post Type Markers on your Map #
Once you have added locations to one or more Posts, you can easily load all those markers onto any of your maps.
Maps > Edit your map > Settings > Integrations > Post Type Locations
Enable the option labelled “Post Type Locations” and set the Post Type to the same type you selected for the editor, in our case “Page”.
Save your map and add the shortcode to your website as usual. Note: You will not see markers within our map editor, but they should now appear on the frontend:
